A Salmonella Outbreak: What To Do If You Get It

The CDC reports Costco and Sam’s Club charcuterie are tied to a salmonella outbreak. Symptoms start 6 hours to 6 days after ingestion and last 7 days. Symptoms are fever, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Things to know about managing diarrhea:
1    Do not use an antidiarrheal like Imodium/loperamide and trap the salmonella in there.
2    Diarrhea is dangerous. It causes severe electrolyte losses and dehydration.

How to prevent a GI related emergency:
Compare what you are drinking vs episodes of vomiting and or diarrhea in 24 hours.
2    DO NOT try to drink until your are no longer vomiting
3    IV fluids and nausea medications with electrolyte replacements BEFORE you decompensate will help prevent dangerous dehydration and electrolyte loss.

If you have a GI illness I can offer IV:
– Lactated ringers for rehydration
– Zofran, for nausea/vomiting
– Toradol (an IV NSAID pain reliever)
– Electrolyte replacements, Myers Cocktail will be the most comprehensive

MOST IMPORTANTLY:
Follow CDC guidelines and do not ingest Costco and Sam’s Club charcuterie until the case is resolved.

As always, if I can help, please let me know.

Stay healthy,
Brianne
