Is Your Immune System at Risk this Holiday Season?

Happy Holidays everyone!

And, also, happy flu, COVID, and cold season. Viruses (flu/COVID/cold season), infection, stress, and pollution contribute to a decrease in micronutrient stores within the body. Micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) play a vital role in our immune system and when they become depleted this makes you and your family even more at risk for seasonal viral illnesses and can also just make you feel more run down. How do you prevent this? Diet is the obvious answer. However, busy professionals who are trying to balance work, holidays, and family do not realistically have time to prepare healthy home-cooked meals. While this is the ideal best option, your on-demand life may need some on-demand maintenance. You need to meet yourself at your level.

Preventative care is the best care. As a nurse I want to get people access to preventative healthcare that works. Especially in flu/COVID/cold season. As a BSN, and currently pursuing my Master’s degree, I am a scientist. I like to use peer reviewed research published in the last 5 years. I found a great article on micronutrients (vitamins/minerals) and how they specifically improve the immune system. I made a chart below with the “cliff notes” and the article is also attached for your convenience.

When thinking about supplements and medications, consider the route in which the medication is administered. By mouth they have the slowest onset and the least amount of absorption. Intramuscular injections are the second slowest. It is more uncomfortable than oral or IV routes because some of these burn. IV is the fastest for efficacy because it goes directly into your bloodstream to be disbursed to your body tissue. It is also more comfortable than IM injections because it does not usually burn. Keep in mind that not all medications can be given by all three routes, some can only be taken orally, intramuscularly, or IV; this is just the quick start guide to the benefits of each administration route.

Take care of yourself. Meet yourself at the level that actually works for you. Stay healthy this flu/cold/COVID and holiday season.

If I can make you feel better, I’m here for you.
